THEMED TOURS IN AND AROUND RIGA

Riga is the capital of the Republic of Latvia, the largest city of the Baltic States, and home to more than one third of Latvia’s population. With 700 citizens it’s located on the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the river Daugava.

The city was founded in 1201. In the 14th and 15th centuries Riga became one of the most important trade centers of the Hanseatic League, and the city was granted special rights to transport goods along the Daugava further to the East.

The historical center of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for its Art Nouveau and 19th century wooden architecture. In 2014 Riga will be the European Capital of Culture along with Umea in Sweden.

Many years ago I was born in this city. At that time it was one of 15 republics of the Soviet Union. After university studies my father was transferred to St. Petersburg (Leningrad) – then it was common for a young engineer to be send to another part of the huge country after graduation. Since that time I have been missing this beautiful and peaceful city... I have some friends and many relatives in Latvia. Often people ask if I am Latvian. No, I am Russian. My roots come from the Old Russian Believers who could not accept Tsar Peter the Great’s changes of major fields including religion when he was westernizing Russia in 18th century. With many other Russians they did not betray their Belief and left the country for Latvia.

If you have a longing to explore Riga and its surroundings we will happily assist you. We can provide accommodations, fully licensed tour guides, professional and safe drivers, and everything else that might be needed for making your trip enjoyable and memorable. Here are the themed tours that, from our point of view, reflect the spirit of Riga and Latvia. We can personalize all of them according to your wishes and interests.

OPEN AIR MUSEUM

Duration 4 hours (driving+walking).

The Latvian Open-Air Ethnographic Museum is one of the oldest and largest open-air museums in Europe. 118 old buildings from all historical districts of Latvia – Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale and Latgale – built from the end of the 17th century up to the second half of the 1930s have been relocated, reconstructed and furnished.

Farmsteads of Latvian farmers, craftsmen, and fishermen have been created in the museum. They all house the permanent exhibition – household and working tools, interior furnishings – which characterizes the time period, the district, and the owners’ vocation.

The museum was established in 1924, and so compared to similar establishments elsewhere in the world, its collection is unique because its formation started at a time when many objects were still preserved and had not been destroyed by war. The Open-Air Museum covers an area of 87.66 hectares of a pine forest in Riga on the shores of Jugla Lake
