Who Russia is famous for?

What is Russia famous for? Its nature, its cities, its sights, and yet… What would our great "mother Russia" be without its great people - people that are not only worshipped here but also famous all over the world? Some are less famous abroad but nonetheless worth admiring. We would like you to get acquainted with these people many of whom were geniuses. Who doesn't know the names of Alexander Pushkin, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov, Pyotr Tchaikovsky?

And yet, there are so many other Russians who came down into history – Lermontov, Bulgakov, Esenin, Levitan, Shishkin, Nesterov, Vrubel, Serov, Aivazovsky, Kustodiev, Borisov-Musatov, Akhmatova, Turgenev, Tolstoy, Rimsky-Korsakov, Glinka, Borodin, Rubinstein, and many, many more! These are the names that every child in Russia knows. The works of the writers and poets are read in schools, the paintings of the artists - looked at in galleries and museums, the beautiful music of the composers - listened to at home and in concert halls.

There are people of other professions who also won Russia world-wide fame - scientists, explorers, critics, architects, sculptors, craftsmen, inventors, field marshals, admirals, ballet-dancers, art collectors, directors. But just for now, read about our greatest writers, poets, artists and composers to start with. The list of the famous people on our site will be constantly growing.

Right now there are ten people for your attention. We chose them and not others to be the first ten for two reasons. Some were chosen because they are incredibly famous and one cannot go to Russia without knowing something about them. And some were picked out because they are our favorites, because we love their works and our lives would take a different turn had we not known them. These are Anna Akhmatova, a wonderful poetess of the “Silver Age” period (beginning of the 20th century), Mikhail Glinka, a composer who devoted his creations to the Russian folklore theme, and Valentin Serov and Mikhail Nesterov, Russian artists whose main theme was also Russia because they loved it as dearly as I do. It is not to say that I don’t like the others. Alexander Pushkin and Pyotr Tchaikovsky, for instance, are such geniuses that it is just impossible not to love them. When you are here in Russia you will be able to buy Pushkin's books in English (or in Russian if you are learning it and want to read in the original), and also the books of other writers and poets. On these pages you'll also find several works of theirs. Some of them are right on this site and to the others (like Dostoevsky's novels and Chekhov's short stories and plays)

In St. Petersburg you will also be able to buy CDs with the music of Russian composers and art albums with beautiful paintings of Russian artists, say nothing of visiting the Russian museum and seeing them in the original!

We hope you enjoy this division of our site.
